It depends on what you want to see. Many of the attractions are seasonal, and the exciting different ways of accessing the Lower North Shore also depend on the time of year. For example, you can see icebergs in spring and early summer, but the best time for whale-watching is summer and fall. In summer, the wildflowers are at their peak, museums are open, and boat tours are possible. Berry-picking is best in late summer or early fall. In the winter, travel by snowmobile and other winter tourism activities are exciting possibilities.

Summer temperatures generally vary between 13°C and 18°C. The weather changes rapidly, so be prepared for a wide range of conditions. It can be sunny and hot, raining, foggy or very windy, especially if you go on the water.

Bring a jacket to protect you from wind and rain, warm clothes such as a fleece, a long sleeve shirt, pants, but also light clothes. Don’t forget to bring insect repellent as well. Sometimes the black flies can be a discomfort.

Once in Natashquan, if you would like to continue down the Coast, you can take the Nordik Express, a ferry and freight ship that travels once per week between Natashquan and Blanc Sablon. The trip lasts one night and two days: you leave from Natashquan Thursday at 5:30 a.m., and arrive in Blanc Sablon Friday night at 7:00 p.m. It is an extraordinary trip that will allow you to experience the tiny coastal villages of the region up close. It is in your best interest to reserve early if you would like a sleeping berth because spots fill up quickly. You can also reach the Coast by plane. There are flights two times a day between Natashquan and Blanc Sablon with Air Labrador. For more information, visit their website at www.airlabrador.com or call them at 1-800-563-3042.

Once in Blanc Sablon, you can take route 138 west as far as Old Fort. From Blanc Sablon going east, you can meet up with highway 510 at the border of Labrador. Tourism Lower North Shore’s offices are located in Blanc Sablon and are waiting to welcome you to the Coast.
